Vocabularies represent the basic elements of any language, thus, if there wasn’t sufficient control in using them then the result would be a difficulty in vocabulary retention when needed. The Picture Word Inductive Model Strategy (PWIM) than traditional methods. The current study aims at investigating the effectiveness of using (PWIM) Strategy in developing EFL Iraqi students' vocabulary retention. The study is conducted by using an achievement test to check the study sample. The researcher has selected a sample of (65) students in third stage in English Department in the Colleges of Education at Missan University in the Academic Year (2021-2022). The students are divided into two groups, the first group is the experimental group and the second group is the control group. In order to find out whether there are any statistically significant differences among the two groups’ achievement, the researcher applied the T-test formula for the two samples in an independent way. Based on the outcome of the study, there are statistically remarkable differences appeared in the results from the two groups. Accordingly, the study proves that using (PWIM) can increase the vocabulary retention of the students.

An Empirical Study of English Learning Burnout Among Chinese Senior High School Students

A number of researchers in language education have investigated the effects of language learning emotions. Burnout, a negative affective factor, is deemed a shared phenomenon among language learners. In the context of teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in China, Chinese EFL learners, especially senior high school students, seem to be vulnerable to English learning burnout (ELB). ELB is a three-dimensional concept derived from job burnout in psychology and academic burnout in general education. It possesses three principal components: Exhaustion, Cynicism, and Reduced Efficacy. The present study aims to explore ELB levels, gender dissimilarities, and English learning performance differences in ELB among Chinese senior high school students. We administered the Maslach Burnout Inventory-EFL Student Survey to a sample of 377 Chinese senior high school students, analyzing the collected data through descriptive statistics, an independent sample t-test, and one-way ANOVA using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 26.0. Our significant findings are as follows: 1) Chinese senior high school students had low overall and dimensional ELB levels; 2) there was no significant gender difference in students’ ELB levels; and 3) the students’ English learning performance levels significantly differentiated their ELB levels. Some theoretical and practical implications are provided.

The pronunciation patterns of most speakers of English as a second language are characterized by regional and ethnic phonological features of their native language. This study sought to examine the consonant articulation of Hausa speakers of English in broadcasting industry in Nigeria. The research was guided by Optimality Theory framework (OT). Participants were drawn from four electronic media in Bauchi State, Nigeria and data were elicited through production test and recording of news broadcasts live from the stations. The findings revealed that the participants ranked IDENTCONT as a high ranked constraints which allowed the importation of voiceless bilabial fricative /ɸ/ from the phonemic inventory of Hausa language into English spoken by the subjects. The results further discovered that /p/ is substituted with/ɸ/ and /θ/ is substituted with /t/, /d/ or /s/. Similarly, /ð/ is realized as /d/ or /z/. /ʒ/ is produced as /dʒ/ or /ʃ. These deviations from RP were caused by phonological processes of spirantinzation/Frication, stopping and affrication.

This study deals with the English language teachers’ perceived beliefs on how to improve English language students’ learning skills. English language teachers’ level of competencies on how to improve language skills of their students is the main focus of this study. Therefore, the domain, “Improving Language Skills,” defined by the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) in Türkiye in the field of “Subject Specific Competencies for Teaching Profession” has been used. This specific domain includes seven competency performances and 63 related performance indicators at three levels: A1, A2, and A3. This study, first, aims to develop a new “English Language Teacher Competency Scale” under the light of MoNE descriptors; second, it aims to observe the English teachers’ competency levels following the suggested performance indicators. The participants of the study were 100 English language teachers, teaching at public and private primary schools in Türkiye. Accordingly, the teachers responded to the mentioned scale, including other variables; such as gender, professional experience, educational background, and the type of schools they worked in. The findings indicated that there was no significant difference between the teachers’ competency beliefs about their professional experience, gender, and educational background; however, there was a significant difference in terms of the type of schools the teachers worked in. Also, this study revealed feasibility of developing the “English Language Teacher Competency Scale,”, and made the scale available to use for evaluating English Language Teaching teachers’ competency levels on how to “Improve Language Skills” in class.

This study sheds light on perceptions and attitudes toward obtaining competency of English teachers at Senior High Schools regarding the integration of Internet, communication, and technology (ICT) in the English classroom in Indonesia. The research involved 113 English teachers from 11 different sub-districts in Riau Province-Indonesia, and data were collected through online questionnaires utilizing Google Forms. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0, while qualitative data were analyzed using a three-stage analysis involving data reduction, data display, and verification. The study’s findings revealed positive perceptions and favorable attitudes toward the integration of ICT in EFL classrooms. Importantly, EFL teachers’ competency in ICT significantly influenced their teaching performance. Qualitative insights highlighted obstacles faced by English teachers, such as limited internet networking and inadequate facilities, impacting their experiences due to the absence of ICT training and socialization from schools. Based on the findings, there is an urgent need to address challenges faced by teachers in rural areas, emphasizing the pivotal role of ICT for effective teaching and learning in EFL classrooms.

Active learning has been a curriculum mandate in the Indonesian education system since the 1980s. Nonetheless, practical gaps existed, as evidenced by the dominance of teacher-centered instruction in public schools. The field needs research depicting how active learning works and enhances learning. Thus, we conducted a qualitative case study focusing on one method within active learning pedagogies: cooperative learning. Specifically, we examined how one of its techniques, i.e., Jigsaw, operated and optimized English as a foreign language (EFL) learners' reading comprehension. We involved one EFL teacher and her students in eighth grade. Data were gathered through classroom observations, in-depth interviews, and analysis of instructional documents. Our data analysis revealed some missed steps in the teacher participants' lesson plans, specifically in the main learning activities sections that had the Jigsaw procedures. However, these activities were enacted in the actual classroom use. The teacher participant also modified her lessons to make Jigsaw more effective. Additionally, she tackled challenges that occurred during the process, especially in dealing with low levels of reading comprehension, unmotivated students, and limited time. For effective use of Jigsaw and considerations when making adjustments in classroom practice, we recommend that teachers understand cooperative learning principles and how they manifest in the procedures of the selected technique(s).

The Application of Mindset Theories in English Language Education: A Synthesis of Recent Research

Mindset theories have been applied to study motivation in various domains, with researchers talking about different mindsets in diverse academic domains. The domain specificity of mindsets has led second language researchers to suggest distinct mindsets concerning language ability and learning outcomes. While there is no lack of research on the application of mindset theories, a systematic synthesis of the literature on mindset theories focusing on the language education domain has remained relatively unexplored. The literature in this study was identified by conducting keyword searches in Scopus and EBSCOhost research databases using a combination of the following terms: “mindset theories”, “English as a foreign language”, “English as a second language”, and “teacher training”. The search results were limited to research articles published in English-medium refereed journals from 2013 to 2023. We scrutinized the titles and abstracts of 128 articles in the initial round of screening and did a second round of close reading for relevance to the synthesis focus. This chapter synthesizes 40 research papers on the application of mindset theories in the domain of language teaching and learning, including 1) studies on language skills such as writing, 2) studies related to language teachers’ role and teacher training, and 3) theoretical and practical applications of mindset theories. The conclusions drawn will be used to recommend future directions in research and practice. The chapter will contribute to the field of mindset theories in language education in terms of research and practice for educators and researchers.

Improving the Word Recognition Skills of Children Learning to Read in a Second Language Through Podcasts

Failure in visual word recognition brings about frustration and failure in reading which impinge on the achievement and reading progress of learners. In order to contribute towards assisting every child to achieve minimum proficiency in reading, this investigation examined the impact of podcasts on the abilities of second language learners in sight word recognition. The study which is quasi-experimental, made use of the pre-test post-test nonequivalent groups method. The study participants who were purposively sampled from a privately owned primary school in Enugu urban, South East, Nigeria comprise thirty elementary two learners. Pre-and post-tests were administered to the participants who were grouped into intervention and control groups. The intervention group listened to podcasts in word recognition skills while the control group learned word recognition through the usual method. Statistical tools such as means, standard deviation and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were utilized to analyze the data collected. The research question was answered through Standard Deviation and the learners’ mean achievement scores, while the hypothesis, which was set at <0.05 level of significance, was tested with the ANCOVA. The results of the investigation showed that podcasts facilitated improvement in the word recognition skills of English as a second language (ESL) learners. The study concluded that the use of podcast proves to be an efficient instructional media capable of promoting achievement in word recognition skills of learners in an ESL classroom. On the basis of the results, exploring the use of podcasts in the teaching of word recognition skills among ESL learners was recommended.

Exploring the Relationship among Environment, Enjoyment, and Performance to Sustain Students’ EFL Learning: Evidence From the Investigation of a Chinese University

The study aims at a deeper understanding of English classroom environment (CE) and foreign language enjoyment (FLE) in the context of a Chinese university and further explores the relationship among CE, FLE, and students’ performance in learning English as a foreign language. The 336 participants in this study were mostly from science departments, and about one-third of them came from Tibet and Xinjiang Autonomous Region. The findings indicate that the participants’ CE and FLE were at a moderate level and that significant positive correlations were detected among CE, FLE and English performance. The study has some practical implications for EFL (English as a foreign language) teaching and learning: (a) The establishment of a good healthy CE can effectively promote students’ performance; (b) The students’ FLE can help them learn English better; (c) Teachers and students should attach importance to the process of English learning, where teachers ought to actively play their part in building a healthy CE and enhancing students’ sense of FLE in English learning.

Speaking is one of the most challenging skills in studying English, raising concerns among many English teachers about how to help improve their students’ speaking performance. While many shy students prefer to work individually, others indicate their competence in group work. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of group discussion in authentic role-play on the speaking performance of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) young learners at a suburban primary school in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Participants in this study include 80 students: an experimental group (N=40) and a control group (N=40). During six weeks of the role-play session, experimental group students will work in groups, whereas the control group’s participants will prepare individually. Pre-tests and post-tests were employed to examine the students’ speaking performance, and interviews are conducted to compare students’ perceptions of the two role-play formats. The results from the speaking test show that the scores of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group. In the experimental group, five components are improved: pronunciation, content, vocabulary, grammar, and fluency. In contrast, only three components (pronunciation, content, and grammar) are enhanced in the control group. The findings from the interviews revealed that students of both group discussion and individual work engaged in role-play activities and substantially improved their language skills. However, they also faced some challenges in effectively using the two formats of role-play during speaking lessons.

Feedback is a crucial element in writing instruction; however, its effectiveness is still debated among scholars. This study investigates the effectiveness of teacher and peer feedback in improving spelling and punctuation skills using a quantitative experimental design that involved two pre-intermediate writing classes at the International Maritime College Oman. Twenty-six participants were randomly selected from both classes. Students' spelling and punctuation errors were assessed using a pre-test–post-test design and data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS. Results indicated that teacher feedback significantly improved both spelling and punctuation, whereas peer feedback improved punctuation but led to a decline in spelling. Overall, teacher feedback outperformed peer feedback in enhancing writing accuracy. Due to the small sample size and focus on academic essays, findings may not be generalizable. Future research should explore additional writing genres and include larger, more diverse participant groups.

The patriarchal structure in Turkish society along with teacher-centered instructional style cause Turkish learners to become passive and dependent learners. Teacher is accepted as an authority figure in the classroom, who should take most of the responsibilities and make most of the decisions about their learning in the classroom context. Also, teaching English is regarded as a subject to be taught, but not a language of communication. These characteristics of Turkish learning culture are considered as factors that hinder students in the continuum of independent or autonomous learning. This study aimed to figure out the learning realities of learners and the specific conditions affecting the development of learner autonomy into consideration to identify students’ readiness for autonomous study. The analysis of the learner autonomy questionnaire results indicated that participants had weak control over their own learning process indicating low level of autonomy. Moreover, they do not feel very competent in making decisions about their own learning in formal classroom environment.

CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) incorporates content acquisition and language instruction, allowing students to develop linguistic competencies while engaging with particular topics. This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of CLIL activities in enhancing students' vocabulary, as well as to explore students’ views of engaging in CLIL activities for their learning process. The participants consisted of 21 primary school students with diverse levels of English ability. The study employed a mixed-methods research approach, combining a quasi-experimental study (one-group pre-test and post-test) with a survey. The results indicated that CLIL activities notably improved students’ vocabulary mastery, with post-test scores (Mean: 60,38) surpassing the average pre-test scores (Mean: 58,28). In response to the students' perceptions of their experiences, among 21 students, 15 (71%) indicated that CLIL activities enhanced their interest in English and science. In this study, CLIL activities were carried out by incorporating singing, engaging in games such as flashcards and QNA, and facilitating group discussions. The CLIL activities offer significant contexts for language application, facilitating the effective acquisition of new vocabulary for students. The students demonstrated enhanced vocabulary test scores as a result of the learning activities. The findings indicate that CLIL-based learning significantly enhances students’ vocabulary, and students express a favourable perception of this approach. Educators should incorporate CLIL activities into their instructional methods to create a vibrant and engaging learning environment. Future investigations could delve into the implementation of CLIL across various educational settings and disciplines to fully harness its potential advantages.
